Germany Creates Cyber Army: Military Reform in the Digital Age

Germany Creates Cyber Army

In response to growing cyber threats, Germany has announced the creation of a specialized cyber unit within its armed forces. The decision was announced by the Minister of Defense of Germany, Boris Pistorius.

The new Cyber and Information Domain Service (CIR) will become the fourth independent department in the German army, along with the ground forces, navy and air force. All types of troops will be subordinated to a single coordination center of the operational command of the Bundeswehr. The army reorganization project was called "Bundeswehr Structure".

The main task of the new unit is to combat hybrid threats, including disinformation and influence operations, as well as tactical tasks in the field of cyber warfare.

Boris Pistorius emphasized that the establishment of the CIR aims to adapt the German armed forces to the changing geopolitical situation. In addition, the defense minister indicated the need to increase Germany's defense budget by $7.06 billion in 2025 in order to reach NATO's defense goal of 2% of GDP.
